Dell Inspiron 14z (N411z) Notebook Review

Extraordinary. The Inspiron 14z is an original design with lots of interesting features. Whether or not this 14-inch laptop with a 13 "format powered by an Intel Core i5 2430M would be a success, we can discover in this review.

The Inspiron 14Z touted by Dell is especially thin and light, but also takes a lot of processing power. It belongs to the consumer Inspiron series, offering entry-level and mid-range notebooks with colorful designs. Dell describes a particularly thin letter "Z", as the thin XPS 15z. Although the latter is more expensive and has the computing power much more than the Inspiron. Price for the Dell online store now start at EUR 600.

Since the construction of the Inspiron 14Z has the most similarities with your V131, with whom he has the same keyboard, battery and AC adapter. Your V131 is an entry-level series of Dell's business, and slightly smaller at the same time raised up, the back of the battery.

Your V131, however, has only a 13.3-inch, and in this case, a feature that is not expressly advertised by clear Dell Inspiron 14Z on the screen frame has a relatively narrow, and can be classified as a 13-inch display Because of its size. Therefore, anyone looking for a subnotebook, it could also consider the Inspiron 14Z.

Case
Dell Inspiron 14Z is a great design. Similarly, the new Dell laptop, the screen has been carried out, and a bulge behind, mainly including the battery. In contrast to the previous series of Dell's business, which was more pronounced edges, the Inspiron 14Z has more rounded edges and corners. The folds appear in the back of the base station, which engulfs the screen below. Front of the screen can be bigger and closes flush with the base station.

With a maximum thickness of 27 mm of the laptop is relatively thin, and is lifted upward by about an inch when the 6-cell battery is attached. When the 4-cell battery is attached to the laptop is flat and appeared much thinner.

There are two colors: "red light" and "Espresso Black". When it is the color of the unit checked by us. The cover display and the upper surface of the base unit are covered with dark brown painted aluminum. The bottom and the frame around the screen is made of matt black plastic.

Manufacturing quality is mediocre laptop. Although it may be relatively stable, and only slightly more than the weak optical drive, and in the middle of the keyboard, seams, and the differences in materials, not always perfectly flat. The base station and the display can be rotated and low power. Hinges of the screen is relatively stiff, and hardly a wobble at all. To do this, the basic unit must be kept low to open the screen though.

Connectivity
When it comes to the interface on 14z Inspiron, Dell has chosen an unusual feature: all ports except for the power behind plastic covers. How it is first necessary to lift a panel down or sideways to access the interface.

This practice is less common interfaces protects dirt and sharp objects. In addition, the laptop has the appearance of being constructed from a single element, like the pages of the book will not be disturbed by the gaps. That this protection would be a tangible benefit is still uncertain.

Looking at the selection of interfaces available, the surprise omission VGA port, which is replaced by a Mini DisplayPort. Also left behind is a HDMI and a USB 2.0 port, which is a load operation, when the notebook is off. Before the air intake has a card reader: SD, MS, and MMC cards. Back to contain the power connector and the Gigabit LAN port. The right side includes a DVD burner, behind which is connected to the audio port for headphones or a microphone, which is followed by two USB 3.0 ports.

Communications
Dell has integrated all the technology of communication customary in the handset. Among these are the Gigabit LAN, Bluetooth 3.0 and WiFi b / g / n, which offers an Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 form, which can also connect your laptop wirelessly with a compatible display Widi (Wireless Display).

Accessories
Inspiron 14z delivery includes only the battery and AC adapter, and waives any enhancement. Due to the omission of the VGA port, adding a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter was favorable.

Software
Dell has equipped the Inspiron 14z with a large software package. This includes Microsoft Office Starter and Skype and Dell DataSafe, with which you can easily backup and recovery discs, and also to store up to 2 GB of data securely online for free for one year.

Similar features are provided by the SyncUp Nero is also included, allowing up to 2 GB of data to be synchronized and stored in the cloud. In addition, Dell has developed its own suite of media with the "stage" program, with which you can view and playback photos, videos and music as well as remote control software using a mobile phone Dell Android.

Warranty
The standard warranty covers a period of one year. This includes a collection of notebooks and return service, a period of ten days. The service can be up to three years to a maximum of 170 euros and includes a day of service in place. Also included with the telephone support service, available to common problems.

Input Devices
Keyboard
We are already familiar with the keyboard smaller than your models, like the V131, which is once again left us a good impression. Dell has used a chiclet design, for which it is separated keys, the keyboard on the polished floor. But that does not attract dust and other debris, which can be clearly seen, and it is difficult to clean between the keys.

The keys have a concave surface, and can be easily found and used without looking. With the relatively short travel keys and good comments, it is good to write, and is also suitable for longer writing assignments. Unfortunately, our revised unit does not include the backlit keyboard option. It can be added another 30 euros in the Dell online store.

The start button and three extra buttons at the top right of the keyboard also remember the Vostro V131. The left of these buttons opens the Windows Mobility Center, which offers an easy to use to configure various settings. The center button opens the Dell Support Centre, which offers warranty and the details of the service information. And the right button can be assigned to a specific user.

Touchpad
The built-in touchpad is a different model from that used in Vostro laptops. A step in the wrong direction, in this case, since the touchpad is not clearly separated, and the fingers may lack the sensitive area by accident. The touchpad is accurate and has good sliding properties. The buttons on the touchpad, however, are relatively rigid and can not be easily pushed to the center. The edges of the buttons do not react in response to pressure. In consideration of what led to several instances where we had to repeat clicks.

Display
Dell can not directly allude to this fact, but the 14-inch screen has built a very narrow. Thanks to a 14-inch screen that can be connected to the base of a base unit 13. "Therefore, the 14-inch Inspiron 14z has a size similar to a 13-inch laptop, such as the Vostro V131. The display made by AU Optronics, and a description of the AUO303C manufacturer. The resolution ranges from 1366 x 768 pixels and the screen is unfortunately a reflective surface.

The reflective display has an average brightness of 176.7 cd / m². Value as bad as it may be enough for indoor use, but is unlikely to be good enough for use in combination with strong reflections off the surface of the screen. The distribution of brightness of 85% is acceptable, even when the brightness decreases toward the bottom of the screen. The black level of 1.3 cd / m² is relatively low, and low light leads to a 141:1 contrast ratio, fine. Therefore, the main consequences is likely to be low spot color images.

As expected, the consumer is not able to display standard, or even almost touch the sRGB color space, or a wider AdobeRGB color space. This criterion is particularly important, however, only one photo editing and professional image.

The Inspiron 14z stand not just with good viewing angles: horizontal color can remain relatively stable, but the images become much darker, with wide viewing angle. Looking from the underside colors darken and investment very quickly. Surprisingly, the view from above is relatively good with other colors recognizable, although the brightness is also lower in this case.

Performance
Dell Inspiron 14z can be equipped with one of three different processors of the second generation of Intel Core series. These include low i3-2330M, 2410M and most powerful processors Core i5 and Core i5 2430M. The only graphics solution Intel HD Graphics 3000 is integrated into the CPU. Therefore, a dedicated GPU is not available.

RAM options include 4 GBS, GBS 6, or 8 GB of DDR3 RAM. For data storage that provides a 640 GB disk Dell 5400 rpm drive with a hard drive or 750 GB at 7200 rpm. There is also a DVD burner, and the standard 6-cell battery. Optionally it can be replaced by a 4-cell battery. Use less battery gives the laptop flat and gives a slimmer appearance.

Our revised model is equipped with this relatively unknown 2430M Intel Core i5. The clock speed of the processor core 2.4 GHz is slightly faster than the Intel Core i5 2410M popular operating at 2.3 GHz. In addition, our revised model is also equipped with 8 GB of RAM 1333 MHz dual-channel DDR3. The Western Digital hard drive, and WD6400BPVT manufacturer code. As the name suggests, it has a capacity of 640 GB and a rotational speed of 5400 rpm.

Using the Cinebench benchmark, the CPU is expected to render different. In this case, the Intel Core i5 2430M a little 'disappointing, because it is unlikely to be better than the popular 2410M Core i5. In some cases, the results are even lower than those achieved by a couple of notebooks 2410M presumably weaker.

With 9715 points in Cinebench 10 makes 64-bit, Inspiron reaches about 70 points lower than Lenovo ThinkPad E420s-edge NWD4NGE (Core i5-2410, ATI Radeon HD 6630M), but about 150 more than the same-equipped Dell V131 (Core i5 2410, HD Graphics 3000).

The cause of the disappointing results can be attributed to the CPU clock speed. Although the 2.8 GHz processor reaches may be temporarily reduced at times to 2.5 GHz Turbo and is about 2.6 to 2.7 GHz, on average. In this case, the most frequent cause of limitation of temperature due to the lack of refrigeration is not the culprit, since the CPU temperature reaches only 70 ° C.

The Futuremark PCMark benchmark determines a score for the entire system, and this by simulating normal use. The Inspiron is no different in this case, but it still works relatively well. With 6806 points in PCMark Vantage, which reaches 250 points more than the Lenovo ThinkPad E420 edge, but 930 points lower than the Dell Vostro V131 with similar i5 2410. This is mainly the result of the hard drive score of 3443 points relatively low.

Hard Drive from Western Digital has a capacity of 640 GB. And 'slower than the alternative, a 5400 rpm. That's why we do not expect anything exceptional data transfer. Taking into account the speed, hard drive still works quite well, achieving an average transfer of 68.5 MB / s HD Tune. When the seek time 19 ms, the HDD has an average performance in this regard. In light of these facts, the SSD would certainly improve the system performance significantly.

Graphics on the Inspiron 3000 is performed by the integrated processor Intel HD Graphics. With a good 3965 points in 3DMark 06, and score as correct in 1785 points in 3DMark Vantage, which is able to overcome almost all other phones with the same graphics solution. The results are even more valued by dedicated graphics cards such as Nvidia's GeForce GT 540M people, which often exceed at least double the points.

Verdict game
The Inspiron is not suitable for demanding games. Due to the omission of a dedicated graphics card, the graphics processing power of laptop is not enough to play games like DiRT3 the test without problems, even with minimal configuration selected. Battlefield Bad Company 2 can be played with an average of 38 fps, but it was enjoyable as the temporal frame rate dropped to 11 fps at times. Use the highest setting is more or less impossible with the two games.

Emissions
System noise
In sleep mode, the Inspiron is relatively quiet, and the term system noise 31 and 34 dB. Fan runs a constant rate, and is overshadowed by a little 'fastest hard disk 32 dB. DVD becomes evident with clearly audible 38 dB, and can be distracting during quiet scenes of the film. With a high processing load on the fan run a lot, and we measured up to 45 dB. Up to this level is still an acceptable value, however.

Temperature
When it comes to temperature, the Inspiron 14Z stands still non-negative. Although 37 ° C, the notebook can be pleasantly warm during the winter months to come, at 52 ° C during the summer when the bottom of the laptop in full use, it can be a source of concern as well as a laptop user .

In sleep mode the other hand, a laptop is relatively cool upper surface. With a maximum of 29 ° C, the notebook is only warm. In particular, the region above the DVD burner is cold. The bottom of the device is already warm enough to sleep, anyway.

In the middle of the back of a laptop reaches the temperature at 37 ° C, which calculates the 31 ° C towards the front. In the lower right optical drive, a laptop remains cool and only gets a 4 ° C warmer than the surrounding area. On the left under the cooling fan, laptop reaches a maximum of 31 ° C.

The laptop is very hot, with a processing load, resulting in temperatures of 52 ° C in the bottom of the base unit. Surface temperatures remain above certain limits, and only reach 37 ° C.

The stress test
During the stress test the processor and the graphics are in full use at least one hour. In this case, the cooling system is also tested, because the processor power is automatically reduced if the temperature of the components should be too.

The CPU temperature remains within acceptable limits during the benchmarks, and up to 85 ° C. Initially, the stress test of the Turbo Boost is still active, and the Core i5 to use up to 2.7 GHz clock available. However, shortly after the clock frequency ranges from 2.7 to 2.6 GHz, and about 15 minutes, the fund will rise to 2.4 GHz clock speed. Limitation feared, which is reflected in some of today's laptops Sandy Bridge, thankfully, has not been activated.

Speakers
The speakers in the 14-inch notebook is surprisingly good. High frequencies and midrange sound very good, even when the volume is increased, and only marginally distortion with loud noises. Bass is unfortunately absent in this book.

Watch a movie without an external sound system is possible because the internal speakers are loud enough. Users who have high standards in terms of sound quality will not move with a good pair of headphones or external speakers.

Battery Life
Power consumption is expected at a low level through the graphics solution in the processor. In this regard, the mechanism of energy conservation in the Intel Core i5, which stifles the clock speed to 800 MHz for the calculation of power requirements are low, plays an important role, since considerably less power is consumed as a result.

With minimum energy consumption in standby mode, the laptop very economical. The maximum no-load high processing was also measured as 10.8 watts also very good. It's even better than the corresponding set of Dell Vostro V131, although it has a low CPU Intel Core i5 2410M. With a high processing load of the laptop will be just as economical as the mean value of 42.8 watts, the same as Vostro V131, and is even close to three watts less than the maximum energy consumption.

Dell chose to use a very large battery Inspiron 14z. By default, a 6-cell battery with 65 Wh is included. This battery is distinguished on the back with about 10 mm down and lifts the notebook up. The same battery is already used in the Vostro V131, and AC adapter is also identical. You can choose a 4-cell battery with 44 Wh, not sticks are also available, so that the portable flat.

The large battery is paid well, and manages to keep the laptop on the legs for more than ten hours. The long battery life, however, is only possible in an inactive state, with all power saving features turned on and off WLAN. Time was determined by the Battery Eater Reader test, which simulates the reading of a text document with a low brightness setting.

Much more convenient, however, is the WLAN surfing, which measures the battery life when surfing the Internet via WLAN. In this case, the laptop managed to last nearly seven hours.

Impressive, the Inspiron 14Z can play DVDs for almost five hours. This may be sufficient for two or three DVDs in a row, depending on the length of the film. In this case, the screen brightness set to maximum and wireless off.

With the Battery Eater Classic test is a 3D file that while fully exploiting the processor. In this scenario, the laptop still managed to keep in a good 110 minutes.

Opinion
Dell has done many things right with Inspiron 14z, which is an attractive laptop design requires extraordinary appeals to your taste. The stability of the Inspiron is good and just the quality of production could be improved. Dell was generous when it comes to interfaces, since there are two USB 3.0 ports and a Mini DisplayPort. All interfaces are also located to the rear of the laptop, which is an added advantage.

The keyboard is very good for writing, and can also be illuminated as an optional extra. The touchpad is accurate and is large enough, even if it is not clearly separated from the surrounding area. The touchpad buttons are very difficult to use and does not react to the edges from time to time.

The display is, unfortunately, the quality of consumer panel, and a less than ideal low-light black level, contrast and low. Along with displays reflecting surface, these features make the handset is not suitable for outdoor use.

Integrated Intel CPU is powerful enough for most daily activities. Solutions integrated graphics processor, is relatively good compared to the baseline dedicated graphics cards, but the fighting than the average level graphics cards like the NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M. It is therefore not suitable to play the most demanding notebook.

The sound system is good to average, and should not be altered during normal use. The temperature on the other hand can reach relatively high levels. The maximum measured at 52 ° C is probably too hot for use in a lap, but when used in office should not be a problem. The speakers are surprisingly good and sound much better than the Vostro V131.

Thank you to the intensive energy saving features of Intel CPU, Alienware is able to score points when it comes to energy consumption and battery life. The longest measured the battery life lasted one ten impressive. This is mainly due to the large battery which stands in the bottom of the laptop, and raises the laptop on the back.

Despite its 14-inch screen, the laptop could easily pass for a 13 "unit, thanks to its compact dimensions. This makes it very portable, while the extended battery can be used for long periods without having to plug the power cable. Those looking for a laptop like this may well have found the ideal candidate.

ASUS G53SX-A1 Notebook Review

ASUS G53SX-A1 offers fantastic performance, a large screen, sharp design, and even has a decent battery life, the most notable is the Nvidia GTX 560M graphics card with an enormous 2GB of GDDR5 high-speed video. Note also the Intel quad-core processor and 12GB of RAM. The only strange thing about specifications is the physical size and weight of the laptop, it's more like a 17.3 inch laptop rather than a 15.6 inch.

Specifications ASUS G53SX-A1 :
  • 15.6-inch anti-glare 1080p display (1920x1080 resolution)
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Construction and Design
G53SX design is based on a military stealth bomber. The wedge-shaped frame is covered in black non-reflective plastic. Most of the visible surfaces have a non-slip rubber finish. The quality of plastics used is good, and not flexible, even when pressure is applied. The overall fit and finish of the laptop is good, but some angles of the edges are somewhat sharp.

The technology and the wedge shape of the notebook makes it cumbersome and difficult to handle. It 'probably the largest 15.6-inch notebook on the market, it is about a typical 17.3-inch laptop and heavier. The lid is attached to the substrate, pushing on the back does not produce ripples on the screen. It takes a very twisted. I wish that the screen is tilted back a bit 'over.

Update G53SX is not an easy task, involves removing the keyboard and palm rest is used for RAM and hard drive. This notebook is actually two hard drive bays, our Review Unit has only one station.

Ports and Features
Despite its size, has a variety of G53SX ports below average for a notebook of this size, there is no notable inclusion is a simple USB 3.0 SuperSpeed. G53SX lack an ExpressCard slot, eSATA and DisplayPort. All descriptions of the images are from left to right.

Screen and speakers
The 15.6-inch screen has an anti-reflection coatings and a full HD 1080p (1920x1080 pixels). The screen is bright and colorful. The contrast is good - it is not as good as on a white screen, however, alongside a good anti-glare screen is much more desirable. The anti-glare, annoying reflections mean, and therefore make this laptop more convenient for use in different environments.

ASUS is one of the only suppliers of laptop embedded color profiles on the screen, press the [Fn] + [C] or the Republic of players in the top left button to switch from one to another. Profiles of the display color warmer or cooler-wise.

There are two stereo speakers located above the keyboard. The sound is above average for a laptop, but not very heavy casualties in the department. In general, are useful, but an external audio device is preferable.

Keyboard and touchpad
The G53SX has a chiclet-style keyboard with separate numeric keypad. It is white LED backlight with adjustable brightness, which is nice practical and aesthetic. The keypad keys are about the size of two-thirds complete, and requires some further clarification. I like smooth and easy to handle key surfaces.

This keyboard, unfortunately, not enough tactile feedback, the main problem is that the key travel (the distance between the compressed and non-pressure positions) is too short to allow meaningful communication. The feather-soft and sensitive compound bow the lack of feedback. Although it is possible to type faster on this keyboard, the lack of feedback, and certainly not the promotion.

The large touchpad is easy to use thanks to its smooth surface. ASUS has made improvements to the buttons on the touchpad since the last time I checked the G53S (the G53SW-A1, to be exact), which are easier to press and the amount of pressure needed to drive the bottom line is consistent. Unfortunately, they are a little too noisy to click on my preferences.

Performance and Benchmarks
The high-end specifications of this laptop can perform almost any computing task with ease, including the latest games and the use of Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Benchmark Game
Our real-world benchmark consists of playing Crysis, EA increasingly demanding FPS game to hit a few years ago. We ran the game, "High" settings of 1920x1080 resolution. Although the game is playable with these settings, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M graphics card in this G53SX seems to be slower than the previous generation of GeForce GTX 460M, which was the last iteration we checked G53S.

The heat and noise
This series of laptops ASUS G Series games, including G53 and G73 has excellent cooling systems. Two fans push the hot air at an angle slightly to the rear of the chassis. Button under full load G53SX becomes hot and the fans to maintain a low noise level. There is no whining fan.

Battery Life
The G53SX lasted three hours, 28 minutes in our standard battery test summary (Windows 7 the balance of power profile, screen brightness at 70%, wireless active, updating a web page every 60 seconds). It's a respectable time for a high-performance 17.3-inch laptop. In the past it would have been an unknown time by a machine.

Conclusion
ASUS continues to produce excellent portable game all-round G53SX is no exception. He was a fantastic success, a large screen, sharp design, and even decent battery life.

One area that needs improvement is the keyboard, has a bad impression with tactile little. On the positive side, it is backlit and has a separate numeric keypad. Another thing to keep in mind with this laptop is that it is bigger and heavier than most 17.3-inch portable housing despite a 15.6 inches - Travellers warned.

They generally have little to complain and fully recommend G53SX ASUS.

Asus N75SF Notebook Review

Soundstage. Average around laptops often suffer from poor image and sound quality. Asus out of masterly drawings routine and has a median rather expensive, but widely known compelling multi N75SF. Find out where the strengths and weaknesses of the unit is 17 inches in our review.

When only the price taken into account, perhaps N75SF not seem particularly attractive. More than € 1,000 for a multimedia notebook than the average?

Once you begin to study the list of equipment, it soon becomes apparent why Asus is demanding a higher than average amount of money. In addition to a Blu-Ray (CD and DVD burning) and eight GB of RAM, the laptop has a capacity of 17 750-inch HDD, 1500 GB, respectively.

The graphics card is not bad - Nvidia GeForce GT 555m scratches only in the premium segment. Of course, a new model of Intel Sandy Bridge processor is used. He is two (Core i5-2410M/2430M) or quad-core (Core i7-2630QM/2670QM). The screen has a resolution of 1600x900 or 1920x1080 pixels either. We broke the N75SF-V2G-TZ117V of about € 1200 (see chart at right) and testing.

Case
N75SF seems a bit 'bulky when closed. Form is not able to affect anyone socks off. With the exception of the circle of metal, it seems that we are considered normal. It is also sensitive to the shiny cover, which shows fingerprints very easily.

The notebook looks much better when it opens. Many of the key elements of the silver seems to refresh. We especially liked rubber palm rest. Although the Asus uses mostly plastic, N75SF does not feel cheap in any way.

Except for the reader projects there is little reason to complain about the production, either. The case has a good overall stability. Only the battery area (above) and the openings of the fan (bottom) can be a bit depressed. As in many other devices, the cover is the biggest weak point. The screen can obviously distorted by both hands. Another task: A crack is heard when heavy touchpad is used with an abnormally high pressure.

Asus could also improve the hinges. First of all, do not do their work quietly, lifts and a second base station during opening hours. In addition, the vibration of the surface also causes the screen to swing a lot. N75SF not often transport anyway. Nearly 3.7 pounds is not nice to carry around for a long time.

Connections
Interfaces
The connectivity is not exactly as expected. Although there are two points N75SF USB 3.0 ports, does not have an ExpressCard slot, FireWire, or eSATA.

Most of the interfaces is on the right. In addition to these USB 3.0 ports, two audio jacks (headphone / microphone), 4in1 card reader, VGA and HDMI and RJ45 Gigabit LAN. The right has taken over and Kensington lock. The left has only two USB 2.0 ports. Both the front and the doors are completely free.

Positioning interface is not as attractive to us. The user workspace on the right will be a limit to the number of external devices are connected.

Wireless communication
There are no surprises in the form of wireless interfaces. The module integrated wireless (Atheros AR9002WB-1NG) are capable of WLAN b / g / n and Bluetooth 3.0.

Software
Manufacturer of new it does in the form of software. The laptop is delayed by dozens of programs (some quite unnecessary) in its mode of delivery. This lengthens the boot time and overall response rate directly after the system startup. The laptop can not really take off after a delete action uncompromising.

Despite this, we would like to share some more. Although the technology "Splendid" ensures a living picture, "Power4Gear Hybrid" is synonymous with a specific energy range of areas. Large: Asus brings N75SF with Cyberlink Power DVD 10 Blu-Ray.

Supplies
The delivery is impressive. In addition, (120 watts) of power, and (6 cell) battery, Asus has a few cable fixers, the little mouse, manual, warranty card and driver's and DVD Tools. In addition, the buyer finds a subwoofer cylinder, which can be connected to a laptop properly.

Warranty
Asus offers a warranty of 24 months (12 months on the battery).

Input Devices
Keyboard
The keyboard has a mixed performance. With the exception of the F-row keys are fine companies (17x17 mm). However, the symbols are difficult to read from certain angles, due to poor signage. The combination of controls on the media and placed unfavorable fluid (left side of the main field) has often hit the wrong key at first.

In addition, pressure, and stroke could be more precisely defined. The layout is basically a condition in which some people may be annoyed by the fact that the "INS" and "DELETE" button on the same track. Otherwise, we will also talk about the cheap-sounding noise type. Unfortunately, there is no light installed.

Touchpad
The touchpad can score better. On the pro side, there are not only generous size (108x60 mm), but the rubber surface to ensure a comfortable capacity acceptable slip. The touchpad can earn more bonus points with gestures support, which can be implemented by two or three fingers, as usual. It greatly facilitates the work. Of course, there is a horizontal scroll bar and vertical on the edge.

In essence, the trackpad works quite reliably. Its accuracy is average. Large: Asus has included the disable option so that players do not need to input accidental curse during games. At the same time, we must mention the possibility of a negative approach unsatisfactory. The touchpad does not include or be separated by the color of the palm rest.

Display
Despite the GeForce GT 555m is designed for previous resolutions of the HD + (1600x900), the manufacturer installs a full HD in the model in question. Thanks to 1920x1080 pixels, the image is very sharp and detailed.

Two contiguous open windows are not a problem, unlike the lower resolutions, where the user is always busy with displacement. Meeting the demand for multimedia, Asus has opted for a ratio of 16:9. LED backlighting has become a standard in the interim.

We were pleasantly surprised at the rate specified. Fortunately not happy with it (if not common to the industry) Asus mill along the screen, but pampers the user with a high-end agent. The first thing that will probably hit the purchaser is a good light: An average of 289 cd/m2 is more than decent. It is even recommended to reduce the brightness for office work and internet.

The low value also deserves praise black (0.32 cd/m2). Unlike most other devices, the dark areas have a heavy cast iron. The contrast is too much competition in its place. 919:1 is an excellent rate (a laptop on average reached only 200:1).

Bright colors make a good impression. Games and movies have been made correctly. However, the screen quality is not enough for professional users. As shown in the following figures, the display has already been problems with the sRGB color space (on average, users can ignore this fact).

Despite the reflecting surface, the 17-inch laptop can also sometimes be used outside - thanks to its high brightness. However, outdoor use is not much fun after all, because the user is confronted with the thoughts of a typical anti-glare screen. A matte surface would have been at the expense of color saturation, but would have been much easier on the eyes. In general, the N75SF is mainly suitable for indoor use.

Viewing angles as the display properties. The larger the deviation is necessary to cause a deviation of the picture, especially horizontally. So, the notebook is also suitable for use on television a number of people.

Performance
Processor: Intel Core i7-2630QM
In order to adequately equip the user for the future, Asus installed a quad core processor in most N75SF models. The Core i7-2630QM, immensely popular among manufacturers, is based on Intel sandy bridge existing offering high performance and good performance. In addition to the 995 million transistors, the processor manufactured in 32 nm process contains a six-MB L3 cache (Core i5 series: three MB).

The clock of 2.0 GHz base no longer causes the storms of enthusiasm. With Turbo Boost function, however, the processor can be automatically overclocked up to 2.9 GHz when needed. Potential buyers to look more closely can be around to find a model with the new Core i7-2670QM, which can clock higher than 200 MHz, so from 2.2 to 3.1 GHz (about 7% faster).

But it does not matter if 2630QM or 2670QM: Both are quad core can handle eight threads at the same time, because the simulation of four virtual cores (Hyper Threading Technology). In addition, all Sandy Bridge processors are built in graphics chip, the HD 3000 graphics, in common. It allows laptop manufacturers to implement the switch graphic.

CPU performance
Core I7 2630QM is part of a performance level better than its dual-core Sandy Bridge CPU benchmark family. Core i5 2410M, often installed in notebooks, it was a bit 'lost in Cinebench Rendering Single-Core 64-bit (downloaded one of the core) (this HP Pavilion dv7-6101eg for example). I7 2630QM core is lead by almost 2%, and 4634-4551 points. The gap is growing massively multi-core rendering (download all households): 16836-9660 points in less than 74%.

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 555
DirectX 11 compatible video card with the Nvidia model. GeForce 555m is based on Fermi architecture ranged from very successful members of the family, the GeForce GT 555m (midrange) and the GTX 560M (for the high end) into the end zone.

1170000000 transistors, 144 unified shaders, 2048 MB DDR3 video memory and clock frequencies of 675, 900 and 1350 MHz (core / VRAM / shaders) to ensure that the latest games can usually play at high details. If the game does not work properly, is in part due to the memory bus is only 128 bits. Asus has had a better version of the 192-bit interface, such as Dell, for example (see the XPS 17 or the Alienware M14x).

Yet, the benefits are too good multimedia notebook average. Nvidia also boasts of features. PhysX technology is particularly attractive to players. As the name suggests, deals with the calculation of physical effects (it toll on the performance of supported games).

Nvidia Optimus
As more portable media, graphics N75SF also change automatically. NVIDIA Optimus is active or Intel GPU GeForce calculations according to the profile of current needs. Thus, the energy is actually stored on less demanding tasks, such as Office or Internet, which in turn is obviously beneficial to the life of the battery. Optimus works very reliable, manual intervention is not necessary. Nvidia control panel provides options for adjusting the response and multiple if necessary.

GPU performance
GeForce GT 555m had to fight against a direct competitor to AMD's Radeon HD 6770M (HP Pavilion dv6-6008eg) in the benchmark graphics. As expected, takes command of the Nvidia GPU with DirectX 11 based on the Unigine Heaven 2.1 benchmark.

Benefit of the whole adds up to 11% from 18.7 to 16.9 fps (1280x1024, high, normal tessellation). The situation is completely different in a very demanding 3DMark 11. While the Radeon HD 6770M GPU score reaches 1379 points in the test, the GeForce GT 555m to settle for a score less than 9% of 1258 points (1280x720, the performance preset).

HDD performance
Two 750 GB Samsung HDD (no RAID), called ST9750423AS drives and 5400 rpm, are under the hood. The system will check your hard drive and tools CrystalDiskMark HDTune. Sequential read and write has 82 to 87 MB / s is good but not extraordinary. Access to a speed of 17.8 ms, also proves to be average.

Strange: Same as his younger brother, the N55SF, holes in the transfer speed between heavily in (see screenshot above HDTune). Since both drives can be easily exchanged, there is nothing standing in the way of modernizing them (eg with a solid state drive).

System performance
N75SF overall performance is in the middle. PCMark Vantage 7339 points are on an equal footing with other devices with comparable speed and, like the Acer Aspire X6815 Medion 7750G Erazo o. Asus should have given a drive unit 17-inch solid state for a significantly higher score.

Power game
We took a closer look at gaming performance with three existing tracks.

F1 2011
Codemaster Formula 1 driver does not seem smooth with great detail. The racing game stutters with 20 frames per second when 1920x1080 pixels, four times the antialiasing and "Ultra" presets (DX11) are used. By contrast, 1366x768 pixels, high detail and twice the antialiasing has worked with 53 fps. We recommend using a more detailed level, four times the antialiasing and DirectX 9 in the native resolution.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution
The GeForce GT 555m also has difficulty playing with the mixture of the person / star, Deus Ex 3. A combination of high level of detail (DX11), MLAA, 16x AF 1920x1080 pixels and 19 fps lead to modest. To really enjoy the dark world of science fiction, it is necessary to reduce the resolution, the level of detail and / or quality improvements. For example, we ended up with 51 fps at 1366x768 pixels, medium details (DirectX9) in AA 4x and AF.

Fifa 12
A successful simulation of football, FIFA 12, there are no problems with GeForce GT 555m. Up to 1920x1080 pixels, high-detail, and four-time anti-aliasing do not carry a portable media player out of phase: 96.8 fps speaks for itself. With this result, N75SF between mid-range devices like the Acer Aspire 3830TG (GT 540M: 67 frames per second) and high-end machines, like Medion Erazer X6817 (GTX 560M: 143.7 fps).

Power Game Verdict
As our benchmarks show, the GeForce GT 555m often begin to stutter and Full HD resolution. Most of the details are not possible in graphic-intensive songs. The performance is adequate only for the level of average quality, in some cases. Instead, less demanding games like FIFA 12, can occur without a hitch with anti-aliasing.

Given the graphical output, we would consider to be perfect 1600x900 pixels. If the players can live with the reduction of resolution and detail where necessary, they will get a playmate correct anyway. Meanwhile, fans of AMD to a unit with its straight, GeForce 6750M, 6770M and 6850M.

Emissions
System Noise
We were pleasantly surprised by the noise. The case fan is not necessarily quieter than other laptops in slow motion, but the 17-inch laptop is relatively quiet under load. While many rivals multimedia exceed 40 dB (A) of the brand in play mode, this counter shows only 34.2 dB (A) for N75SF (distance: 15 cm). The laptop was not unpleasantly noisy, even at full load. 37.4 dB (A) is absolutely unacceptable. Hard drives are never intrusive whatsoever. Thus: Users sensitive to noise can definitely take N75SF. But what about heat?

Temperature
There is almost nothing to criticize on the basis of temperatures. All surfaces of the matter is entirely within an acceptable range in undemanding tasks (active GPU Intel): An average of 25 ° C in the top and bottom is a great rate. The action gets hot during the game, but not exceeding 40 ° C (keyboard area) is still acceptable. Good: The wrist support does not exceed 30 ° C.

Components naturally reach much higher temperatures. The graphics card and processor set to an acceptable level of 80 ° C in the stress test (Furmark and Prime95). It would be nice if Intel Core i7-2630QM no throttle at 800 MHz over the entire load. We also feel that the processor strangled in practice test kit because of the temporary stuttering. However, the model frame of reference and the results did not support this assumption. If the gas cell during the game, the tool "Throttlestop" might help.

Speakers
Asus announces the N75SF with a "unique sound" on its website. For this claim can not be classified as "marketing gibberish usual", the producer has chosen to work with the audio specialists Bang & Olufsen. The laptop comes with a subwoofer, even small ("SonicMaster", weighs about 150 grams) to make the perfect listening experience.

The result is a truly impressive standard laptop. And 'possible to believe that an external audio system is turned on, when you listen more closely. The sound is all natural, accurate and complete. And thanks to the subwoofer, you hear a good bass. However, the speakers are not exactly perfect.

Thus, the speakers usually intense fighting during the load, and it shows, more or less depending on the situation. We believe that the maximum volume could be slightly higher. But all in all, very few devices can be the sound quality of a candle N75SF (for example, the Dell XPS 17).

Battery Life
When Intel Graphics HD 3000 is in standby mode, power consumption remains within manageable limits: According to our metrics, 17-inch laptop uses only 20 watts. On the other hand, takes between 87 and 122 N75SF watts of plug load power - the interest rate on accepted performance available. 18-inch Acer Aspire 8951G (including the Core i7 and GeForce GT 2630QM 555m) consumed approximately the same test.

All expectations in the long battery life due to Optimus technology can be lost. Asus only has a 6 cell battery in the box. Is rather low, with 56 Wh (5200 mAh). The laptop just stops after an hour when the minimum energy saving options and maximum brightness are used during charging.

The run-time without significantly improving the Nvidia GPU. Although our test DVD took almost two hours, the laptop lasted about 2.5 hours wireless Internet surfing (maximum brightness and the average energy saving settings). The battery life could really impressed us standby with a minimum brightness and maximum energy saving options. Test drive the team published a good environment BatteryEater 4.5 hours.

Verdict
Despite the scratches N75SF only for a very good note, Asus has developed a good multimedia notebook. The great sound system is not the only unique selling point, but also high-end display. All types of media to freely develop their atmosphere - that's what we imagine a desktop replacement to be equal.

Asus has done all things well, and components. Intel Quad-core is a good amount of reserves and a lot of data can be stored on the hard drive (2x 750 GB!).

Nvidia GeForce GT 555m is also a good choice, but the compromises often have to make some graphical alternatives to the native resolution HD. At the same time, entertainment, fans were involved in the Blu-Ray drive. Large touch-pad, a generous amount of accessories (mouse and a subwoofer) and a low temperature, respectively, the noise of development are also strengths.

However, several points below counteract a better assessment. In addition to the relatively high weight and short battery life, N75SF suffers from a moderate range of interfaces. Many users expect an ExpressCard slot, a FireWire port and an eSATA port for € 1000. Not to mention the poorly planned disposal of existing interfaces.

The keyboard has also been in second grade, when a bad keyboard lettering and adversely positioned in the media bar, in particular bothered us. In addition, there is a stain-sensitive screen cover, and absolutely filled with the installation of Windows.

However, users who want a platform of diverse entertainment, with good picture and sound quality in Asus N75SF.

Dell XPS 14z Notebook Review

Beauty hurts. The first step towards a more robust design was created with XPS 15z, and now more compact 14-inch version is the logical progression. Like its big brother, the Dell XPS 14z hope to win the heart of customers with its good looks. He also solid material, but by ...

So, you liked shiny metallic silver Dell XPS 15z, but it was just a touch too big and too heavy? Help is at hand: Dell has just introduced a new XPS 14Z, which, as the name suggests, offers a 14-inch display case and a correspondingly smaller.

The 14z up to the traditional "Dell XPS" brand that has always stood for high performance with its powerful Intel Core i processors generation later the bridge of sand. The entry-level option is a i5-2430M, or you can go after the most powerful dual core i7-2640m.

While Intel Graphics HD 3000 graphics rendering takes care of the basic configuration, the more valuable models equipped with GeForce GT 520M graphics card and Nvidia's Optimus. In each case, a 7200 rpm hard drive is used. Sorry - but more on that later.

Price, the new Dell XPS 14Z is between 899 and 1049 €, depending on the settings chosen. Means of comparison: the higher the 15z starts XPS 840 million online purchases, and can be configured with up to a maximum of 1300 €.

Case
If you saw the XPS 15z, you know what this looks like a small 14z. Before us, we have what is virtually a perfect copy of the large model, with slightly smaller dimensions. To give the details, we're talking about 336 x 235 x 23 mm to 385 x 260 x 25 mm, at least 5 cm, 3 cm wide and a height of less than a little thinner. Weight: 2,020 g, approximately a half pound lighter than the 15z. So it's a clear victory for the 14z regard to portability.

As for the materials used, the 14z also has aluminum parts that are perfectly aligned in a symphony of colors, the board of the basic unit of money, the key steel case blue - separated by a thin chrome bar - dark box gray screen with a rubber feel to it, and finally, the display of the cover itself is new money. The chiclet-style keyboard with money, backlit buttons fits perfectly into the overall visual scheme. Who is responsible for this area to be sure of the gratitude of all lovers of design clients.

XPS 14z is also nice in his trade. We could not find any paint defects or other weak point, except that the joints of the pieces on the trailing edge, around the part that covers the ports are visible, but always clean finish. Two minor criticisms always the case: plastic imitation of the central hinge is still recognized as a quick look cheap and the display itself also wobbles slightly when you adjust the angle. All in all, you must call the case a success.

We were also curious to see what things look like inside the XPS 14z. After a very difficult movement access panel on the bottom of the laptop, in addition to live is also guaranteed with plastic hooks that have gained access to internal components. This statement opens the album and sticks of RAM, can be easily removed and replaced. Also remove any accumulation of dust in the cooling fins of the two heat sinks.

Connections
Most ports on the Dell XPS 15z were on the left side of the back box, providing access, but away from the area potentially embarrassing side of the laptop. With the XPS 14z, however, almost all the ports have moved to the rear.

It's a good idea in principle but not a single USB port is in a visible location directly, simply plug a USB drive or digital camera, a small device or another smartphone, this apparent advantage is moving rapidly on the downside of the class.

The left side is now offering the SD card slot 3.5 mm connector for headphones and microphone. In the back, we now have a Kensington lock, outlet, miniDisplayPort, HDMI, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, and RJ-45 LAN port.

We have nothing against the quality of the ports, our tests are discussed below. The only thing that hurts is the lack of one, the easy access USB port on one side.

The USB 3.0 port reached transfer rates of up to 150 MB / s in our tests, slightly less than the M18x Alienware (165 MB / s) which has the same Intel SSD 510 (SM10510 AsMedia three cases USB chipset). We measured a maximum transfer speed of 28.4 MB / s for USB 2.0 ports, which is within specification.

We also tested our 27-inch miniDisplayPort test track. Max resolution 2560 x 1440 pixels the port was not problem.

Communication

WLAN, LAN and Bluetooth, the Dell XPS 14Z is expected at the level of connectivity in terms of communication. This also applies to the power of individual standards on closer examination, the WLAN, we got about 45 MB of our tests (and a few 'years, the TEW-633GR router). Gigabit LAN ran a little 'disappointing 815 MB (see M18x: 851 MB), for example, Sandy Bridge experimental plant operated 940 MB here.

The integrated webcam at the screen provides an acceptable image to our interlocutor. The quality of sound transmitted by the microphone is also very good.

Warranty
At the time of this writing, no details yet available on the warranty, but we can assume that the same options that are available for large XPS 15z. This means: 1 year warranty included, 1 year on-site service for about 25 euros more, and an extension of up to 3 years next day on-site service for around 250 Euros.

Input Devices
Keyboard
Our evaluation of the keyboard on this model has proven to be a bit more problematic. In principle it should be the same keyboard used in the model of the Dell XPS 15z great as the difference in size between the two was offset by the use of narrow openings for the speakers beside the keyboard. The appearance and layout and key size are the same as the larger model.

Typing feel of this model, like the 15z, can be described as a short distance of major depression a little 'confused tactile response point. Another critic called spongy, especially in direct comparison with those used in the latest MacBook. In the end, it's probably down to personal preferences, whether to accept or reject. We did both agree that we had a company install the appropriate keyboard - unfortunately this is not always the memory books.

Touchpad
Again, Dell has been able to use the same units as the 15z. The touchpad is quite impressive with its high surface area, good reactivity and physical properties, and its two buttons, with a generous distance from depression and produces a very quiet shutter. In contrast to the XPS 15z test model (which has had a significant pre-sample), multi-touch input 14Z test this model worked smoothly enough to be practical for everyday use.

Display
The 14-inch screen used in this model were hidden behind a plastic plate by Dell. This gives the visual effect of a design peak-to-edge, with only display surrounded by a rubber lip that runs around it, which replaces the rubber plugs that normally keep a distance between the cover and base.

But as soon as you turn off the machine, the optical illusion of a panel that fills the entire eyelid becomes clear. While the panel is "only" 5 mm inwards from the edge to the left and right, there are 12 and 8 mm between it and the top and bottom edges, respectively.

Now the facts LGD0327 panel used here: a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels is standard fare, but it's fine on the screen diagonal. You may be angry if you are looking to work closely with multiple windows open at once, in this case, you should contact an external monitor.

For my testing of the Dell XPS 14Z, we had two engines: a near-final pre-sample, and also the retail-ready model. The measures we have taken two screens varies a bit 'from each other, if they have the same model numbers. Machines for trade, we measured a maximum brightness of 225 cd / m², with an average of 203.9 cd / m². The prototype machine was approximately 20 cd / m² darker.

Even if the brightness is good in and of itself, we found the black level, which plays a crucial role in determining the image contrast, to be an obvious weakness: 1.51 cd / m². This will bring up the contrast 141:1 maximum brightness at maximum low (144:1 100 cd / m²). This can also be seen with the naked eye, for example, a movie dark, or on-screen graphics and games, where the black parts really look more gray than black.

You can also say that the screen quality is not very large due to the color space that can be represented. Compared to sRGB, the panel is left behind. Business users of photography and graphics fields will not be happy with that, but should not have much effect on the average consumer. The contrast values are much poorer than a consideration for them.

This is a thin 14-inch machine weighs only two pounds, the question of external use, and use the move is important. The average brightness of 200 cd / m², the XPS 14Z should in theory be a good opportunity, but not decrease the brightness of 180 cd / m², while running on battery. We have not found a way around this, even if the BIOS.

Limited brightness, contrast, below average and a reflective screen surface, which unfortunately does not look good practical use of a laptop, while outside. Need to find a well-shaded spot, if you want to be able to make the contents of the screen.

While viewing angles along the horizontal line of sight is correct, you can very quickly get annoying distortion of the image when the angle of the screen is set. This means that the vertical angle to be adjusted continuously, if you use the machine on your lap.

Performance
As already described in the opening, the Dell XPS 14z is available with two different processors, and two different graphics devices. The entry-level option is an Intel Core i5-2430M processor, the successor to the popular 2410M CPU with clock speed of something better (2.3 to 2.9 GHz with 2.4 to 2410M against 2430M 3.0 GHz).

Our reference test that comes from Dell XPS 14z sample with a pre-2410M CPU, which means that the results could be slightly, but very slightly, in general, lower than the CPU in the 2430M series model. We also add some tests with results from XPS 14z detailed features of the processor 2640m, currently the most powerful dual-core processor is in the range Intel Sandy Bridge. This allows us to define the upper and lower markers of the Dell XPS 14z is the power range.

Both machines are based on NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 for their image processing, it will automatically use the Optimus Graphics HD 3000 is an integrated processor, which is trying to find the best possible configuration for each application situation. The cheapest Dell XPS 14Z, dedicated graphics card is omitted, and the Intel integrated graphics, which covers everything.

This is more than enough, if the laptop is used mainly for office work. In fact, the GT 520 can only be the start of the Intel integrated solution for a small margin of power. But the advantage of the Nvidia graphics, a wide range of integrated features that are very positive regarding the use of multimedia (audio and video). How computer games, the GT 520 to give a significant benefit of a few individual games, more on that later. Nvidia driver also supports the further advantage of the GT 520 is calculated

About the drivers: our production model XPS 15z had a total of 268, 86 relatively old drivers preinstalled. Our attempt to install the latest version of Nvidia 280.26 was a definite failure. According to information from Dell, however, the 14z must be supported by the Green NVIDIA drivers in the future.

In our tests, we also noticed that the latency that we observed using the DPC Latency Checker, continued to turn briefly outside the Green Zone when WLAN is activated. Without WLAN, always remaining in the green zone. This may be of interest to users working with audio and video streaming.

Application Performance

To start, we had to go to a more practical applications, such as demanding but potentially Photoshop CS 5.1 by example. Manipulation of RAW photos from a digital SLR camera was pleasantly quick (filter) and no long waits.

The traditional hard drive turned out to be a more limiting factor than the processor. The processor is almost never reached the mark of 100% utilization during our test, but the hard drive is standard, although it is one of the fastest 7200 rpm models.

Same with Premiere Elements (video editing), we could edit and add transitions in Big Buck Bunny at 1080p with no problem. We have not noticed any annoying delays. And it is also true here that the loading of data and clips were a burden on your hard drive, but not the CPU, even entry-level i5 2430M (2410M tested) had enough power for these applications.

In general, it's a shame that Dell does not offer a solid state drive faster, at least as a configuration option, which would have fit perfectly with the concept of high performance XPS series. Users who want one will have to take matters into their own hands.

System policies, which we did, our XPS 14Z pre-sample (2410M, GT520M) achieved good results, presenting itself as more than half a league similar portable devices. XPS and retail data Top Model 14Z was able to do even better, with 8010 points PCMark Vantage, the top-spec laptop is at the same level of the HP EliteBook 8560p, for example (2540M, 6470M HD). The basic configuration, the sample was not finished so far is 7604 points.

7 results in PCMark testing was the same: to reach 2010 points ranging from (pre-sample 2410M) with up to 2236 points (2640m, a high-end), the result is equally impressive when it is on the level of the HP EliteBook 6460b ( 2520M/HD 3000) or the same level Dell Inspiron 14Z (2430M/HD 3000) which was recently again.

If the SSD is used, these results would look different, and start-ups would be greatly accelerated along with the time needed Launching programs and various documents to download, even if the 7200 rpm HDD is used here to give some lightweight benefits of the standard 5400-rpm. Cons: hard drives are also faster much more difficult than their counterparts, which rotate more leisurely pace.

Video Performance
HD video playback is a simple combination of Core i5 and GeForce GT 520 with resolution of 1080p H.264 can be played fluently with Windows Media Player and support for the 8% of CPU and GeForce video engine of 24% for the use. 2K and video playback through VLC without support GPU could also simply load the CPU up to 20% utilization.

The unique system will reach its limits with 4K Flash and YouTube videos. Internet Explorer 9 4K video game, "Life in the Garden", but only with heavy masses of stuttering and dropped frames. However, Google Chrome is able to play without stuttering problems in a few at first, even if the CPU usage would require about 90%. In 1080, both browsers had no problems at all, CPU utilization of 23%.

CPU performance / throttle

We did observe some limited testing machine CPU up the hardware configuration of the system at full load (at room temperature at 23 ° C). In the stress test the CPU temperature rose to about 95 ° C, heating the GPU up to 94 ° C, and then strangled 2640m 800 MHz, when the internal temperature of the chips to fall to around 80 ° C and the CPU speed back up to 2.8 GHz This sequence is repeated.

Our basic configuration of the GPU and the CPU has reached a temperature below the limit of 99 ° C without limitation (at room temperature to 21 ° C). But even a small obstacle near the air intake was enough to tip the system on, and then the CPU throttled here.

Total cooling system could operate more or less in its border with the CPU and about 35W 17W TDP of the graphics card GT520M. The hot summer days, it could become a problem. In realistic scenarios we could not observe the limitations that result from suffocation. In benchmarking tests Cinebench (R10 single core) CPU Turbo 2640m bandwidth is used to its full potential from 3.3 to 3.4 GHz for example.

Graphics Performance

Nvidia GT 520 used in this entry-level dedicated graphics card. Can not ignore the clear on Intel HD 3000 (integrated in CPU) for all applications, but the individual games can benefit from the graphics card because of a better driver customization, while the various scenarios of multimedia applications can be used as a result of the characteristics Special (PureVideo HD, CUDA 2.1 DirectCompute ObenCL ...). However, fans of computer games should avoid this GPU. For them, the GeForce GT 540M is the lowest level of the scale to make a choice of products.

We tested the performance of graphics cards with the help of Futuremark 3D Mark tests, among other things. In 3D Mark Vantage, the output level of the plant samples were placed in finished 2277 points (PhysX disabled), with discreetly between the same machine (Asus 2410M/GT520M U30D: 2281 points).

Our set-up Top 2640m CPU only managed a little 'better here at 2332 points, moving closer to the same P43SJ Asus (2410M/GT520M), for example. To compare: the machines with Intel HD Graphics 3000, sat a short distance from the back of this test, with results up to 2000 points.

In the last test of 3DMark 11, we carried out a range of 450 points (2410M) to 566 points (2640m). These results also perfectly into the image we expect the GT 520M. In a similar level or slightly above is AMD Radeon 6470M for example.

Mass storage
For the XPS series 14z, Dell has gone to start with traditional hard drives with a speed of 7200 rpm. In our model pre-test sample, a Seagate ST9500423AS with a capacity of 500 GB has been used, while our top model specifications retail comes with a 750 GB hard drive is Western Digital (WDC WD7500BPKT).

When comparing the Seagate with its competitors, it will be towards the bottom half of the standings at 7200 rpm hard drive that we tested, while the WD hard drive is more effective than good results in the HDTune benchmark test. A very noticeable vibration will not be ready to further strengthen our model of retailing, but the sound was still on the hard drive is often stronger than the fan, so that the laptop is always clearly audible.

Of course, the ideal solution would be an SSD fast and quiet. But the normal 2.5 "was used in the same country, you can upgrade themselves.

Gaming Verdict
As already observed in many previous tests on the graphics card Nvidia 520M GT, the GPU is not your first choice when looking for the best possible performance for modern games. However, some recent and older titles are definitely playing in the low to high settings and graphics, as shown in the table below.

Again, depending on the game, the benefits of the GT 520M compared to the HD 3000 Integrated Graphics is obvious. Far Cry 2 benchmark, for example, showed 32 fps on high graphics setting with GT 520M, unlike the integrated HD 3000, which still provides less than 20 fps. The results of FIFA 12 was similar, with 63 fps on high graphics settings compared to 46 fps for HD 3000th

Of course, only in rare cases, this is enough for a stage in the implementation of graphics that you are able to choose, but it is already playable a security buffer for smooth gameplay. You can also take advantage of NVIDIA drivers technically more mature.

Emissions
System Noise
If you consider the fan noise which is integrated in the housing, the Dell XPS 14z is always in the background during office and outside the system load of any note. It is 7200 rpm drive that allows the constant hum audible.

When the computer is on, the fan starts immediately and permanently increase your speed when necessary. You can also become very important, even when on the Internet, which seems very difficult. The two machines we tested produced a similar type of noise, but the 7200 rpm hard drive in the model of retail with the highest specifications worked much more slowly.

In the diagram of the diffusion of sound (produced with Arta, a measurement related to MCE-8000 and USB sound card 6Fire DMX) can clearly see the jump to 125 Hz at 36 dB. This could be due to the strong vibration of the hard drive (in the sample pre-).

Temperature
Dell XPS 14z proves to be something of a double-edged sword when it comes to surface temperatures. With the use of light (idle desktop) or not at all, it remains constant at a comfortable temperature.

But that's another story, with heavy use, not just the inner core quickly becomes eligible for higher temperatures, but also the whole body has a very high temperature up to 46 and 47 ° C, the upper and underside of the base accordingly. Hotspot is no doubt that the position of the GPU and the CPU, which is very close to each other in a rear corner.

As described in "choke" section, the cooling system seems to have some problems with the internal components in what is after all a very thin case.

Speakers
Dell XPS 14z has two stereo speakers for left and right of the keyboard that sends the sound up to the user through openings in the cabinet. The sound quality can be described as very close and clean, but perhaps a little thin and lacking bass. In direct comparison with the small speakers in the MacBook Pro 13 Product XPS 14z sound slightly better.

The audio output port (3.5 mm) did well without any hiss or static when tested with a GHS1 AKG headphones, and delivered a maximum amount of good. Even the high ohmic AKG K701 was monitored with a sufficient amount (maximum volume).

Battery life
Our pre-basic specification shows everything is allowed 14.8 watts at idle. Our measurements with high CPU specifications 2640m version covers the same range. Only when under stress of our stress test, increased high-spec model a little more basic model with 2410M CPU, with a maximum of 83 watts. Power 90 watts, however, is large enough to handle this.

The interior of the box Dell has included a 58 Wh lithium-ion, which is screwed, but can in principle be exchanged. In combination with energy consumption, as described above, we obtain an expected maximum life of about 6.5 hours (tested with Battery Eater test drive, screen brightness at a minimum, WLAN off , power save mode). Realistic daily use when you surf the web, for example, a range of about 5 hours expected.

Under stress, the XPS 14z last for only about 1.5 hours on a full charge. As long as you choose 'high performance profile "in Windows Energy Manager, you can also avoid reducing the CPU performance when using the battery. The" Dell power profile "on the other hand, holds the CPU 80% (2 points against CB 2.47 CPU test 11).

Verdict
In "verdict" on our review of the Dell XPS 15z, which was launched prior to this model, so hopefully in the direction of models yet to come, we are now faced with reality.

With matter, Dell has done almost everything right, especially with regard to the visual effect. XPS 14z is as elegant as its big brother, and will look good in any environment imaginable. The successful harmonization of colors and shades with aluminum made an excellent impression.

The first weak point is the port, first and foremost, the decision to place almost all the ports on the back, leaving no one USB on the side, is incomprehensible to us. This means that even plug in a USB drive simply requires awkward groping behind the machine. If you look in the book, the reason for this becomes clear, as space is limited on the motherboard, but it does not change the fact that it is inconvenient for the user.

Power supplies that Dell has chosen to correspond in large part to the larger Dell XPS 15z. The keyboard has LED backlighting, and a very spacious layout. Touch can be a bit 'vague, or even porous, based on your selection.

The second weakness is undoubtedly the point of view. You can not complain a bit more brightness of 200 cd / m², although we have seen better. However, the contrast ratio of 144:1 only evil indeed, especially in view of the image of the high-end XPS series. That makes it almost irrelevant that the color space is only an entry-level standard, the surface of the screen that reflects allows outdoor use is virtually impossible, and that the viewing angles are not the best.

As for power, you can be happy with the high performance you get from the latest Intel Pentium. The 7200 rpm hard drive does not rate slightly better than the usual models 5400 rpm, which is manifested in the success of the application benchmarks, but the reverse is the result of higher noise. It's a mystery to us why Dell has not systematically use SSD line up their portfolio of multimedia laptop (with a price match!).

Graphics performance of the GT 520M is low on the side, but the laptop probably would not have been able to take much more than that in terms of cooling capacity, as is already difficult to maintain the base temperature and the case under the control of stress.

On the positive side: the life span of more than 6 hours means that meets the expectations of mobility that have a thin 14-inch machine.

Overall, we see little advantage for choosing this Dell XPS 14Z more than its bigger brother, the XPS 15z, in addition to a slightly more compact, lighter weight and 500 g, 15z is an obvious advantage in the first place, and a display much better (available FHD) and the battery life is better too.

Toshiba Satellite P775-100 3D-Vision Notebook Review

Spec warm person. Toshiba to launch another 17-inch laptop called the Satellite P775-100 3D Vision 3D, which caused a sensation at home as possible. Equipped with a powerful Intel processor and Nvidia, the laptop can also convert 2D to 3D hardware - but it is only visible with shutter glasses.

Not only was the 3D in cinemas in March in recent years, but also at home. It was also confirmed at the last IFA in Berlin. Whether on TV or on the go with the laptop, this trend is still in the sense that no special 3D glasses needed to view 3D content (video, photos or games).

Notepad 3D satellite P775-100 3D Vision technology always chooses the shutter glasses. This means that 3D animation can not be seen with glasses. The two images are displayed on the screen with a slight time delay on the left and right eye.

The image looks very blurry without the glasses. First, the shutter glasses that work synchronously for simple images, it becomes an image in three dimensions. A feature of this model is that Toshiba is usually only need one click to convert a 2D image to 3D hardware. The Toshiba Satellite P775-100 comes with 3D Vision with a pair of shutter glasses Nvidia.

Toshiba portable 3D is a well-known case of the Satellite series. The 17.3-inch screen has a Full HD resolution (1920x1080), but with a shiny surface. Toshiba has installed a Core i7 2630QM (quad core) and NVIDIA GeForce GT 540 on the inside. It also has two hard drives of 750 GB each of RAM and 8 GB instead of a DVD, a Blu-Ray are available in the laptop (burn DVDs available).

Case
This model has also inherited the peculiarity of the case to use the entire area of the Satellite. Proceeds by Toshiba to rely solely on plastic, and you will notice when first touched the replay. The surfaces are very pleasant to the touch, but are slightly less rapid.

Overall, the case has a satisfactory stability of the pressure but not good. The wrist support provides the extreme right and left, under the weight of your hands. The optical drive is, as often a weak point. Although the number pad above it can not be depressed below the bottom plate can.

The display lid is held in place by two hinges, it is good to keep. Hull just swings when opened. Maximum opening angle of 140 degrees is particularly suitable for use on your knees. The frame of the screen is a 17.3-inch display is easy to fold, and can also be printed on the back. Display bezel "rattle" and the base station in a small space, because it lacks the hook block or similar mechanisms.

The black surface attracts dust like magic phone, but not be as prone to fingerprints.

The Satellite P775-100 weighs 3.15 kg proud 3D Vision, including a 6-cell battery. The power supply adds another 650 grams. The external dimensions are 270 x 413 portable x 28 mm (front). Behind a height not exceeding 36 mm.

Connections
Many interfaces are distributed around the laptop. Also four USB ports, one of which supports USB 3.0 is a VGA and an HDMI port, two audio jacks (1 headphone, 1 microphone) and the RJ45 connector.

The optical drive - Blu-Ray - is integrated. The card reader SD / MMC and MS memory cards sitting on the front.

The rear is exempt from the interfaces and adopted in this book. No dock connector on the bottom of the laptop.

Point of consultation: All ports on the sides are in the frontcourt. Annoying cables and plugs on the side of the laptop to take into account when used widely.

Communications

Toshiba uses the standard connectivity options: satellite laptop can connect to a Gigabit network through a network cable. The controller is compatible with Realtek 10/100/1000 Mbits. Atheros wireless adapter (AR9002WB-1NG) is compatible with IEEE 802.11 b / g / n. Bluetooth 3.0 + HS presentations as a third option.

Security
The P775-100 does not have many safety features. As for equipment, there is a preparation for a security lock (Kensington) in the case. And that was all. This model does not have a fingerprint scanner, biometric facial recognition.

However, the system can be password protected, a user password or a supervisor. The hard drive can also be password protected.

Supplies
In addition, a laptop and charger, Nvidia 3D Vision Kit, which includes a shutter, case, cleaning cloth and adjustable focus is on the screen. It 'a small Windows Media Center remote control.

Software

Also, Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit with SP1), the following programs are installed on Toshiba laptop: Toshiba Disc Creator, Toshiba Value Added Package (Toshiba Power Saver, Toshiba Zooming Utility, Toshiba PC Diagnostic Tool, Toshiba Flash Cards, Toshiba Components Common Driver, Toshiba Accessibility, Toshiba Button Support), McAfee Internet Security (30 days updated the Internet), WildTangent Game Console, Toshiba Photo Service, Toshiba Recovery Media Creator, WinDVD BD, Nero BackItUp & Burn Auto-Backup Essentials Microsoft Word and Excel (advertising and limited functionality), Toshiba Video Player, Nero Multimedia Suite 10 essential Music Place Toshiba, Corel Digital Studio.

Warranty
This model has a warranty period of 24 months, including a 2-year extension of the international manufacturer's warranty (Europe, Middle East, Africa) and place a pick-up service in Germany and Austria (repairs must be registered by Toshiba Portable Hotline). Producers also sell a warranty extension to 3 or 4 years (64, € 109).

Input Devices

Keyboard

The keyboard, which consists of 102 keys, including a separate numeric keypad, was not changed compared to models from other satellites (P770-10P). Toshiba builds on the evidence here. If the user prefers, a backlight stays on and can also be disabled via a timer. Each key has its own LED. We note that the relatively long space bar is not disclosed to the left. This is either the Toshiba intends, or LED already had a malfunction in our test model.

Toshiba has seven function keys above the keyboard. They light up when touched. Three keys to enable or disable WLAN, 3D functionality or start your Web browser. The other buttons control the volume, or "start" and "pause" buttons for the VCR.

Touchpad
The touchpad is placed in front of the keyboard. From P770-10P is capable of multi-touch and gesture support navigation (scrolling, zoom). The touchpad can be disabled via a dedicated button.

Webcam

Two webcams in the framework of the screen (with microphone) supports a resolution of 1280x800, and can also be used as a 3D camera.

Display

Toshiba uses a 17.3-inch TruBrite glossy FHD (43.9 cm) P775-100 3D Vision notebook. It has an LED-backlit display is able to reproduce a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 pixels (full HD) and 16:9 format. Add to supervisors / monitors can be connected to a laptop over the side of a VGA or HDMI. They allow a maximum resolution up to 2048x1536 pixels.

Measurements of the FHD screen showed a 696:1 contrast with a value of 0.26 cd/m2 black and 80 percent illumination. The maximum brightness of 189 cd/m2 just is not convincing.

Comparisons of the range of reproducible colors showed an almost complete coverage of sRGB. As a result, the screen used is greater than the current average.

Not many bright colors - it was already in moderate - was left out due to the limited brightness of the screen. The reflections of the environment has helped more than this. Little could be seen in the high screen brightness depending on the angle of vision. Even the glossy screen bezel of great importance.

Viewing angle of the display of the FHD Toshiba laptop is not very wide, especially in the vertical plane. The content displayed begins to deform at an angle (front and rear) of about 45 degrees. It fades, inverse, respectively, so that we can not recognize much of the content displayed in these positions.

When the screen is at an angle of 90 degrees to the base unit, the content can be recognized and both the front and sides. The colors are strong and rich, in contrast to the 17-inch device, depending on the lighting conditions (in dark rooms).

Performance
A 2.0 GHz Core i7-2630QM used as a processor. This processor has four cores and supports Hyper Threading (8 threads). Single-core processor can be overclocked to 2.9 GHz using Turbo Boost 2.0, if necessary, and with adequate cooling. The quad core processor is based on the current architecture Sandy Bridge (with 32 nm manufacturing technology, 995 million transistors on a die size of 216 mm2).

Intel has integrated DirectX 10 capable chip Intel HD 3000 Graphics and Memory Controller DDR3-1066/1333 (max. 8 GB) Quad Core CPU die. NVIDIA GeForce GT 540 graphics are automatically enabled or disabled via Nvidia's Optimus.

We will check the latency issues that may arise due to errors in synchronization with external devices at the interface where the program, the DPC Latency Checker. All measurements were in the green zone, which can be viewed on the screen. This means that the constraints, particularly in the audio or video, it is unlikely.

How well the Satellite P775-100 price benchmarks of CPU is best represented by a direct comparison with the almost identical model built, the P770-10P (i7-2630QM/GT 540M):

The results of 4.51 points (CPU) and 24.99 fps (OpenGL) are on par with the Toshiba P770-10P (4.72/24.99) or A701 laptop Schenker XMG Advanced (4.57/25.04) in Cinebench R11.5. It also seems to be similar in Cinebench R10 rendering.

In the final model (P775-100), PCMark Vantage ends in 6519. This result is significantly lower in the field of our database and 444 points (~ 8%) behind the Toshiba P770-10P. Schenker Notebook, Advanced XMG A701 (17 "), even managed a score of 14,285, with the same CPU / graphics. However, the installed SSD contributes significantly to the high score Schenker laptop.

The PCMark 7 result is poor, with only 2024 points. The Toshiba P770-10P reached 2688 points (25%) here.

Two video cards work for Toshiba P775-100. One is the Core i7 CPU built-in graphics HD 3000 and the second is dedicated Nvidia GeForce GT model 540M. Although the graphics are not embedded in its own video memory, NVIDIA can use to 2048 MB.

Depending on the application and power (battery or wall outlet), both Intel and NVIDIA is automatically enabled. Optimus passes the Nvidia GPU to make it necessary to start the computer. Individual programs can also be Intel or NVIDIA manually via the Nvidia control panel.

Nvidia should always be used in full-screen in 3D. The Intel graphics power reserves would not be sufficient for these 3D calculations.

Prices determined by Futuremark benchmarks are slightly below the expected level. We can only save your score is 978 points in 3DMark 11 For comparison: 3DMark 11 score of 1033 points VPC-F21Z1E/BI Sony Vaio, which is also i7.2630QM and the same graphics. Toshiba P770-10P Managed 1009 points here. The results are similar to P775-100 3DMark 06 results always slightly lower than the average, almost identically constructed Toshiba P770-10P.

The stress test
We can not determine anything negative on the Intel quad-core in our simulated stress test. Clock speed of the CPU was about 2.9 GHz, at first, but set at about 2 GHz in the stress test of 90 minutes. The Core i7-2630QM basic clock has not been overcome, however.

Hard Disk Performance
There are two hard drives in notebook Toshiba, but they are only implemented as a single drive. The two discs come from Toshiba, has a capacity (gross) of 750 GB each, and come from MK7575GSX series, which rotates at 5400 rpm.

It is possible to activate a RAID with insufficient support. The two Serial ATA hard drives are quite fast and achieve a burst speed of about 125 MB / s. The access time is 17 ms.

The transfer rate on average 85 MB / s is pretty good. But it could certainly be higher in a RAID array. Too bad Toshiba does not use a RAID controller similar.

Verdict of the game
Just went how to deal with GT 540M in sets of random testing because the evidence of complete sets have already been taken with this GPU. More information on these can be found in our fact sheet from the GT 540M. This also applies to games with four CPU cores integrated HD 3000 Graphics.

The points are measured with P775 in the dirt Games 3, Mafia II, FIFA 11, or roughly comparable to previous rates found in our extensive database.

3D Vision

I also wanted to know what the game looks like in 3D. The transition to 3D is easily accomplished by pressing a button on the Toshiba Satellite P775-100 3D Vision stereoscopic 3D that provide the feature is enabled on the control panel.

The stereoscopic 3D mode is disabled or enabled in the control panel Nvidia card. Strength 3D effect can be customized via a cursor.

Overlapping images can be linked in the eyes of shooting, which includes a laptop computer provided. The images are seen at the same time and the picture is very clear, without glasses.

A button on the toolbar remedies soft touch. Pressing this button will convert the image from 2D to 3D and vice versa.

Even if the frames per second (fps) was still pretty good test of our games, fps nosedived here. For example, when we were still measured in more than 53 frames per second, Mafia II, a low resolution, interest rates dropped to 20 fps in 3D mode. In Drift 3 or FIFA 11, a frame rate halved for all resolutions selected.

Depending on the resolution, stuttering became evident, and the first game went back to lower resolution and less detail. Dirt 3 first went well, in 800, and 3D. The game was unplayable with Full HD and 3D. FIFA 11 was not very sensitive. 20 images of 40 frames were recorded in Full HD (1920x1080). 30 instead of 60 images of resolution 1300. Fraps (a test program to determine frame rate) showed a 90 3D images with resolution 800.

Even the old games work on stereoscopic video card in 3D mode in the third dimension.

The Toshiba P775-100 may also benefit from the current trend of filming 3D blockbusters only. The movies can be played via the best Blu-Ray. Even movie trailers on the Internet use in 3D when appropriate parameters are available. A few 3D movie trailers are included in the laptop in its delivery condition. They show how these movies could be like on the laptop.

3D movies may be watched without 3D glasses, but only in 2D. Only a few settings for the player is required. Picture on the left or right is omitted, then.

Emissions

System noise
Although the fan system is permanently active in the P775-100 laptop, not observed in negative evaluations of different noise. We could not measure a rate of 40.1 dB (A) at a distance of 15 cm during charging.

Rates were between 34.8 and 35.1 dB (A) in idle mode. The noise also increased to 38.2 dB (A) for DVD playback. The noise soon died in the room and was inaudible at a distance of just over 1.5 meters.

Temperature
Toshiba P775-100 3D Vision will do well in the standby mode, or a simple office, and only selectively for more than 30 degrees (bottom). The maximum temperature is covered by about 1 degree lower. Average rates reached 26.9 (top) and 27.2 degrees (bottom).

The waste heat peaks were significantly higher in the stress test: We have measured 51 degrees Celsius in the area of the valve at the base. Only 24.1 degrees Celsius on the opposite side. The average was 36.6 degrees (bottom) and 36.4 degrees (above).

Wrist Support for the temperature reached 41.4 degrees to a stress test, which can appear even without a thermometer. Laterally granted the power dissipation also feels very hot, especially when the handset is placed in her lap.

Speakers

Two speakers to take care of her. They are located above the keyboard in the laptop Satellite. The two-speaker Harman / Kardon sound quality issue, although the device does not have a subwoofer. The sound can be further enhanced by Dolby Audio Enhancer and adaptable to your personal preferences. The volume can be easily controlled or controlled by soft bar (above the keyboard). But key tone is annoying when they are raised. This can not be disabled.

Battery Life

Energy satellite P775-100 is approximately equal to the model P770. The greater power is required, the use of higher power. Standby (minimum brightness, disabled wireless modules), where all economies are enabled, power consumption is 16.5 watts. 21.9 watts consumed by a bright, active and WLAN settings on high energy performance.

The measured maximum power from the laptop (stress test) is 94 watts. The adapter 120 watts (about 650 grams) is sufficiently sized to that.

The included 48-watt battery is based on a lithium-ion technology and can work independently P775-100 notebook with an external power source. The question is - how long? We stress test the processor drains the battery after a relatively short time.

The laptop shuts down after only 48 minutes. Recharged in two hours, we saw a movie on DVD in just 53 minutes. After this time, the screen went black and the laptop turned on its own. Recharged again, we surfed the Internet via WLAN. The battery lasted 121 minutes here. We measured 164 minutes (~ 2:44 pm) in the test drive, where WLAN is turned off and screen brightness set to minimum.

These are relatively short time, but perhaps the energy profiles including Toshiba laptop can help here. Even recorded the execution times of the test battery saving mode with Acrobat Reader. Instead of the previously measured 164 minutes, is now only 131 minutes. Taking matters into their own hands an apparently greater effect than the default constructor.

Verdict
Belle phones with 3D capabilities, but we wonder why the glasses are still needed. Toshiba has demonstrated that it can be done even before the IFA. The 3D Vision P775-100 is almost entirely based on the model P770-10P (without 3D capabilities) - including all the advantages and disadvantages. Toshiba is copied, its interfaces and functions 1:01. Even the cheap plastic. We expected more than a 17.3-inch laptop costs about € 1500.

The integrated hardware has not changed, except for two hard drives and a memory unit. The hard disk capacity has increased to 1.5 terabytes of RAM and now is 8 GB. It's the least we can expect given a price difference of ~ € 500 compared to the P770-10P. A quad-core (Core i7-2630QM) and Nvidia (GT 540M) provides enough energy in the current model, but only in 2D mode.

The P770 model is not 3D. A pair of shutter glasses is included in the scope of delivery and you can watch movies and games on the size of any third parties. 2D material can also be found on the Satellite P775-100 in 3D. 3D movies work properly. More importantly, matte and glossy screen would have been much better.

In games, stitched rate of nearly 50 percent when the unit is from 2D to 3D. Therefore, the stuttering should be provided in some games and only a significant reduction in graphic detail. Another feature of the Satellite P775-100 DVB-T is installed, but the antenna matching is not included.

€ 1,500 for a laptop in 3D in a plastic case has a lot of money, especially when the graphics performance is just a standard mid-range. And the screen does not belong to the best of its kind either.
